Residential Design

As a final project for the residential design term, Sheridan tasked us to request someone in our lives take on the role of the client hoping to build a home from the ground up. My client was my elder sister; who is a consummate professional with various highly important responsibilities. As a full-time Social Worker with the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, the current president of both the local and provincial union chapters, in addition to continued education in her field and part-time ADHD Coaching with a clinic; her perfect home had to have room to accommodate her extremely busy professional life, but equally active social life. As someone who loves to cook, bake, and entertain both family and friends; the house needed dedicated space to allow large gatherings like Thanksgiving or Christmas with a family as large as ours. Family is very important to my sister, but she also is someone who needs time on her own in her own space to thrive. This influenced the overall concept of the designs, for example, the staircase is fairly large to represent an island in another endless sea with multiple functions. Because of our large multi-generational family, there has never been an event with enough chairs for us all to comfortably be seated so often people would sit and gather on the stairs eating, talking, or just generally enjoying community time. Stairs have always been more than stairs in the family.
